Choosing the right location for your photos can completely change how they feel. Whether you're planning engagement photos, grad, creative portraits, or a couple's session, the Reno and Lake Tahoe area has some of the most diverse and beautiful backdrops in Northern Nevada and Northern California.
From desert landscapes to mountain meadows and alpine lakes, here are some of the best photography locations in Reno, Lake Tahoe, and the surrounding areas.
Moonrocks (Sparks, NV- Also known as the Hungry Valley OHV area.)
Best for: Desert sessions, engagement photos, adventurous couples
This one feels like you landed on another planet… in the best way.
Moonrocks is raw and rugged. Huge rock formations, soft desert tones, and wide open skies that seem to go on forever. It’s the kind of place where you can climb, explore, and just be without feeling boxed in.
If you’re drawn to something a little bold, a little different, this is it. It works especially well for couples who want movement, playfulness, and photos that feel a little adventurous without needing a full hike.
Sunset out here is unreal. Everything turns warm and glowy, and the rocks almost feel like they’re lighting up.
Best time to shoot: Sunset for warm tones and glowing light
Tahoe Meadows (Ophir Creek Trailhead)
Best for: Mountain views, summer sessions, golden hour portraits
This spot feels like summer in the mountains… in the way you wish you could bottle up and keep forever.
Tahoe Meadows (Nestled in the mountains near Lake Tahoe) is open, airy, and filled with golden grasses, wildflowers (depending on the time of year), and those dreamy Sierra views in the background.
There’s something about the light up here that just hits different. It’s soft, glowy, and wraps around everything in the prettiest way.
If you love a mix of mountain views without being fully in the trees, this is such a perfect in-between. It’s especially beautiful in late summer when everything leans golden and warm.
Best time to shoot: Golden hour for soft, glowing light across the meadow

Donner Lake (CA)

Best for: Lake sessions, sunset photos, intimate portraits
Water always brings a different kind of energy to a session. I feel like creativity always flourishes here.
Donner Lake is one of those places that feels both peaceful and a little cinematic. You’ve got the deep blue water, mountain backdrops, and little shoreline spots that are perfect for slowing things down.
It’s especially good for sessions that feel a bit more intimate or reflective. The kind where you’re not rushing, just soaking it all in.
Sunset here is soft and layered, with the mountains catching that last bit of light. And if you’re up for it… ending a session with your feet in the water is never a bad idea.
Best time to shoot: Sunset for reflections and soft, layered light
Galena Creek Park (Reno, NV)
Best for: Couple photos, great landscapes, fall portraits
If you’re wanting green or even a really nice winter backdrop… this is one of my go-to spots.
Galena Creek Park has that soft, forested feel without needing to go deep into the mountains. Tall trees, a running creek, little bridges, and open grassy areas that catch light in the prettiest way. In Winter, the gorgeous contract without losing any color... Chef's kiss!
It’s calm. Grounded. Easy.
This is one of my favorite places for couples and families because everything is close together and super accessible. You get a lot of variety without a ton of walking.
And in the fall? The colors here are so good.
Best time to shoot: Late afternoon or early evening for soft, even light

Hope Valley (CA)

Best for: Fall colors, scenic landscapes, romantic sessions
Hope Valley feels like something out of a painting.
Wide open meadows, winding rivers, and mountains that just sit quietly in the background. It has this slower, almost nostalgic feel to it. Like time softens a little when you’re there.
In the fall, it turns unreal. Golden aspens everywhere, warm tones, and that crisp mountain air that makes everything feel a little more alive. But even outside of fall, it holds its own. Spring and summer bring soft greens and wild, open space that photographs beautifully.
This is the spot for sessions that feel calm, connected, and a little bit timeless.
Best time to shoot: Peak fall color season or golden hour in summer
At the end of the day, the “best” location isn’t about what’s most popular or most dramatic. It’s about what feels like you.
Some people want open desert and space to run around. Some want trees and shade and quiet. Some want water and that slower, more grounded energy.
If you’re not sure which direction you’re leaning yet, that’s completely okay. I help guide all of my clients through choosing a location that fits their vibe, the season, and how they want their photos to feel.
